Glitter Mountain near St. George, Utah

These photos do not do Glitter Mountain justice. This place is only about 10 miles from St. George, Utah. If you are looking for something fun and free for the whole family to do while you are in St. George, you have to find Glitter Mountain. My kids like to call it Sparkle Mountain. We all had so much fun here.

Glitter Mountain is an old Mica Rock mine in Arizona, about one mile from the Utah State line.

You can chip away Mica near the bottom of the pit, or choose a piece of glittery rock from the thousands that are scattered on the ground surrounding the mountain.

This is a great place to go in the winter. The temperature was only 55 degrees, but it felt much warmer with all the rocks reflecting the sun. I can't imagine how hot this would feel in the summer. Be sure to bring water with you.

The directions we found online to get to the mountain required 4 wheel drive. On our way home however, we found a much faster and easier way.

Here's how to find Glitter Mountain:

(Traveling in a Minivan directions)
• Find Telegraph Road in Washington, UT
• Turn south onto Washington Feilds Road
• Keep driving south on Washington Feilds road.
• After a while you will go under the Southern Parkway road.
• Soon the pavement will end.
• Take the first right onto a nameless dirt road heading South.
• Drive about 10 miles, until you will reach some houses at the Utah/Arizona border, do NOT turn down this street, keep going straight.
• Drive about 1.5 miles. Soon you will see the glittery white mountain to your right.

If you are looking for more advendure, and you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, follow these directions:
(Check the weather to make sure there is no rain in the forecast.)
• Take I-15 South to Southern Parkway
• Travel East on Southern Parkway. After 3 miles take the River Road exit.
• After crossing the AZ/UT state line, look for a sign to your left that says: Little Black Mountain Petroglyphs.
• Go about 3 miles, you will see a bathroom and the Petroglyph site.
• Continue East on the dirt road.
• About 2 miles, you will sees some houses and a sign that reads, St. George 10 niles.
• Turn right at the sign.
• Drive about 1.5 miles. Soon you will see the glittery white mountain to your right.

Be sure to pin these directions on your Vacation board on Pinterest.

Valentine Countdown - Free printable

I know it's a little early for Valentine's Day, but It's not too early to start preparing. I don't have a lot of Valentine's Decorations, so I thought I'd make this little countdown advent calendar.

1: CLICK HERE to download the 3 page PDF file to your computer.
2: Using your home computer, print the file onto Card stock. Or if you don't have a nice colored printer, you can upload your files to your local print shop. I uploaded the files to Office Max. I had them printed onto an 80lb Matte Cover card stock.

3: Carefully cut out the heart shapes.
4: Use some glitter paper or ribbon to cover some wooden clothes pins. I bought my clothes pins at the dollar store. My glitter paper is from Hobby Lobby. After cutting your paper or ribbon down to the size of your clothes pin, you can use a wood glue to adhere the ribbon. I used a glue gun, because I'm too impatient to wait for glue to dry.

5: Cut out all the Advent activities (or make up your own.) I provided more than 14 to choose from. Adhere each activity to the back of a heart. I used tape, so that I can mix up the activities in years to follow.

5. Use the clothe pins to hang the hearts on some string, ribbon, or a strand of twine. Enjoy a Valentine's season filled with Love!

Feel free to share this project with your friends and family on your blog or through social media. Please link to my blog for the tutorial and download.

DIY Felt Snowflake banner Tutorial & Pattern

I'm re-posting my most popular tutorial from almost 5 years ago. Somehow between all those years, all our moves, and all our computer crashes, the downloadable file was damaged.
So, by popular request, I've recreated it for you to download. FREE!

I'm not going to lie. It takes a long time to cut out all these snowflakes. But it's worth it. This banner is also very inexpensive to make.

You will need some "Stiff Felt" in white or your desired color, some Ric-rac or ribbon, sharp scissors, a hot glue gun, sequins, or any fun embellishments you might have.

1) CLICK HERE to Download and print this 2 page PDF file.
This will be the pattern for your snowflakes.
2) Cut out the paper snowflakes for a pattern.
3) Trace Pattern onto some stiff felt.
4) Cut snowflakes out of stiff felt.
5) Use a hot glue gun to glue sequins or embellishments to the center of each snowflake.
6) Glue each snowflake to ric rac or ribbon to make your snowflake garland.
7) Find a fun place to hang your garland and enjoy!

Note, snowflakes take a little time to cut out. I like to cut them while watching my favorite movie.
Please feel free to share my pictures and this tutorial with your friends. Please direct them to this website to download the snowflake patterns, as the pattern is not intended for
re-distribution or re-sell. Thanks!

This is me way back when, showing my snowflake banner on Studio 5.
